Responsibilities / 360 footage stabilisation.
Inition worked with Sky Dive Dubai to give members of the public the feeling of what it was like for the 2 base jumpers who set the World Base Jump Record for sky diving off of the top of the Burj Khalifa.
Using footage obtained from a skydivers helmet cam, a motion base and a fan, users were literally screaming with fear.
The challenge that I had to overcome was the footage that was captured was linked to the skydivers head, so wherever he looked the footage moved. Which is not great for someone watching in VR, as this tends to cause motion sickness. So I had to find a technique in order to stabilise the footage so that it would be totally smooth and the user would be in control of where they looked without any strange effects.
The problem was, and one that we often run into at Inition, is that no one had done this technique before (in 2014).
After lots of RnD, I used Blender, with traditional tracking techniques and some maths to apply the motion back to the equirectangular sphere. The process had to be applied to 8 sections of the footage, and then these spliced back together to create a seamless smooth jump.
